Emmy Hennings and Rahel Sanzara: Poems and Prose. Translations and Annotations for an English Edition
Project Summary
• Emmy Hennings, Poems and Short Prose [Translation and annotations for an English edition]
• Rahel Sanzara, The Skilled Hand [Translation and annotations for the English edition of a German novella]

German reading knowledge required.

In this project you will participate in the preparation of a two editions featuring two unknown modernist women writers, with the aim to produce tow annotated editions of their work in English. The first writer is Expressionist and Dadaist writer Emmy Hennings (1885-1948), whose selected poems and short prose sketches will be translated into English for the first time. The second writer is the former dancer and actress Rahel Sanzara (1894-1936), who, in the 1920s, wrote one bestselling novel, The Lost Child. Her subsequent 1932 novella, “Die glückliche Hand,” has been published in German only once, in 1984. The annotated editions aim to show the importance and literary value of Hennings’ and Sanzara’s work. You are going to actively participate in scholarly research for the annotations and will also be involved in the editorial work. We will also create a website together which will feature your translations and interpretations of Hennings’ poems as an open-access work-in-progress.
