Aresty Research Assistant
Learning about Chinese Religion through working with Medieval Texts
Project Summary
Few scholars have explored the religious landscape of medieval China (200-1000 CE). China was then at a crossroad where foreign religions met native traditions. The result was the appearance and development of many new religious ideas and practices. Some of them can still be observed in contemporary Chinese communities; but many more have been forgotten. My work as a historian of culture is to recover and reconstruct these ideas and practices in an effort to study the people and the society that produced and maintained them.

My current project focuses on the concepts of fate/destiny and the practices of divination. By becoming my research assistant you will learn about medieval understanding of fate/destiny and the rituals/methods that were use to predict and control the future. As you assist me in the painstaking process of recovering and reconstructing these beliefs and practices, you will learn how to identify relevant sources and analyze the data in search of more clues. You will also help me track down other scholars who have worked on relevant aspects of Chinese religion and their publications. This opportunity allows you to acquire research skills in fields of humanities and knowledge of religions in China.
