In this project we will look at active and passive cooling at small scales and for electronic cooling applications. Passive cooling is based on natural conduction and convection, while in active cooling either forced convection or an electric heat pump is used. One type of heat pumps is Peltier coolers, which are solid-state devices and could pump heat from one side to the other side when current is passed through them. The aim of this project is to optimize the performance of such devices theoretically and find the conditions under which one type of cooling processes is advantageous to the other. We are targeting testing several of these devices experimentally and optimizing their operating conditions.
