Assigning Genders to Englsih Nouns in Hindi-Urdu
Project Summary
Modern Hindi-Urdu uses many English words. This feature has become more dramatically increased in the past few years. They are spoken and written using the Devanagri script and assigned a masculine or feminine gender. However, English nouns do not have gender, rather they categorized as neuter. The proposed study will find the criteria of how native speakers assign gender to English nouns without prescribed rules. After conducting the survey, we will prepare a list of vocabulary for learners and teachers of Hindi to help them learn and teach the conventions of Spoken Hindi. The outcome of this study could be very useful to Hindi-Urdu language learners and teachers, especially non-native speakers, who teach Hindi-Urdu. Currently while there are many Hindi-English, English-Hindi dictionaries available for language learners, such dictionaries do not identify the gender of newer English loan words. In the future, we hope to get this type of dictionary published for novice to intermediate level learners.
