Aresty Summer Science
Efficacy of bed bug control methods and techniques
Project Summary
Bed bugs are a fast growing urban pest of significant public health importance. Bed bugs bites cause discomfort, loss of sleep, anxiety, and sometimes allergic reactions. The current resurgence of bed bugs in the U.S. and many other countries stimulated interests in finding better methods to prevent and control bed bugs. Unfortunately, bed bugs are difficult to control. Many of the existing products or techniques designed for bed bugs are not very effective or lack research data proving their effectiveness. This Summer Research Project will investigate the efficacy of selected consumer and professional products. The objectives are: 1) to compare the efficacy of commonly used products; 2) evaluate the effect of formulation, testing method on efficacy; 3) investigate insecticide resistance among bed bug populations. The goal is to provide new unbiased research data on product efficacy and factors affecting the efficacy of insecticides. Student research will learn how to maintain live bed bug colonies, conduct bioassays, and practice experimental design and statistical analysis.
