The purpose of the proposed research is to develop a case study of a historic Afro-Brazilian community in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil in order to explore the current human services conditions of the community, understand how the community is organized and governed, and learn about the social networks in the community. Qualitative data will be gathered through focus groups and participant observations of the community. While the selected student will not travel to Brazil, they will perform the following research functions.
The selected student will serve as a research assistant on the proposed study: "A Case Study of the Ciriacas Community." The student will help carry out the following tasks:
1) Student will collate data given in the document collected by the faculty supervisor, and assist with data collecting.
2) The student will analyze the data with the most suitable methodology approved by the faculty supervisor.
3) The student will conduct an extensive literature review to assess the current state of academic writings on the historic Afro-Brazilian community in Brazil.
4) The student will write a report on the whole process including conclusions.
5) The student will serve as co-author for scholarly publication.
6) Should external funding sources become available,the student may have the option of traveling to Brazil to work on gathering additional researchh data (NOTE this option is NOT guaranteed, Not a requirement for ellibibilty for the Aresty assignment).
