Aresty Summer Science
Study of cockroach attractants
Project Summary
German cockroach is the number one indoor pest in the U.S. It contaminates food, produces allergens that can lead to allergy and increased asthma morbidity. Common methods for monitoring cockroaches is to lay glue board traps. It is known that adding attractive food to the trap will significantly increase the efficacy of traps. But they are inconvenient for commercial use. At present, there is not an effective commercial cockroach lure on the market. Studying the cockroach attractiveness to various chemicals and chemical mixtures would be very important toward the development of an effective commercial lure. This Summer Research Project will explore for an effective cockroach lure to meet the increasing need from consumers and pest management professionals. The objectives are: 1) to compare the attractiveness of German cockroaches to individual chemicals; 2) to compare the attractiveness of German cockroaches to food items; 3) to determine the most cost-effective lure formula for attracting German cockroaches. The goal is to provide the consumers an effective cockroach lure for detecting and killing German cockroaches.
