Black Activist Archives: Digitizing Oral Histories of Black Activism
Project Summary
Throughout my career in social and cultural history, I have been using oral interviews to uncover stories of black activism that were not recorded in documents and books. Recently, I have begun exploring digital platforms to tell these stories (see website link below). Most of my work has been in Brazil, but I also have a collection of interviews with former students and faculty at Rutgers who were instrumental in creating a more inclusive and diverse university community. In this project, I am seeking a student who can help create an online archive for three collections, each of which will require some transfers of media created on analog platforms. With two of the archives, I will work with the student to design interactive elements enabling people to contribute to collective histories. We will create digital spaces for all three collections that help tell the story of the movements they help document. The ideal candidate will be someone knowledgeable of the relevant IT, who is interested in the stories of communities and social movements, and who can think creatively about designing and utilizing websites. Portuguese or Spanish a plus, but not required.
