Ribozymes are molecules of RNA that act as catalysts to speed up chemical reactions in the body by factors up to 10 million. The classical central dogma of molecular biology confines the role of RNA to be that of a molecular messenger carrying genetic information transcribed from DNA in the cell's nucleus into the cytoplasm where it would be translated into protein gene products. This hypothesis was shattered with the discovery in 1982 that RNA could act as a catalyst - a breakthrough that has (...)

Opioid addiction represents a major health crisis, affecting an estimated 1.7 million people in the United states alone. In 2017, almost 50,000 people died of opioid overdoses. An important link exists between opioids and pain, but the exact nature of this relationship is unclear. One important piece of information for understanding the relationship between pain and opioid abuse is information about how peripheral signals for pain comes to affect parts of the brain that are typically involved in (...)

Characterization of Photosynthetic Water Oxidation Efficiency in the Hydrogen-Producing Green Alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii
Optimizing primary photosynthetic productivity is a key step in applying aquatic microbial oxygenic phototrophs (AMOPs) to bio-energy solutions. In this project, the student will work with a graduate student mentor to characterize the efficiency of photosynthetic water oxidation in strains of the green alga Chlamydomonas (...)

In its almost 150 years of operation at Rutgers University, the Rutgers Geology Museum’s primary mission has been to educate the public on natural history related topics. Through the presentation of its exhibits, collections, public lectures, tours and other programing the Museum serves as the focal point for bringing together university and community members with the common interest of understanding the natural world.
Much of today’s educational resources are focused on formal settings such (...)

As the world is looking for alternative fuel source for transportation, we will focus on the cellulosic biomass as a potential bio-ethanol materials. Research will be centered on creating transgenic grasses (turfgrass and switchgrass) expressing cellulosic biomass degrading enzymes to improve the biomass conversion to fermentable sugars.
