The Science of Learning in Places: Exploring Best Practices in Informal Education at the Rutgers Geology Museum
Project Summary
In its almost 150 years of operation at Rutgers University, the Rutgers Geology Museum’s primary mission has been to educate the public on natural history related topics. Through the presentation of its exhibits, collections, public lectures, tours and other programing the Museum serves as the focal point for bringing together university and community members with the common interest of understanding the natural world.

Much of today’s educational resources are focused on formal settings such as schools and classrooms. However, informal educational settings, such as the museums, are often overlooked for their potential to communicate social, cultural, and scientific information to the public. The student selected for this project will investigate how museums are utilized to express major scientific and cultural ideas, and research best practices for developing and assessing informal educational activities. The student will then apply these ideas to devise their own informal education activity and assessment plan. The ultimate goal of the proposed research project is to create a new activity that will be presented at a museum event or informal educational setting, observe the reaction of visitors and museum members to the new activity, and perform and analyze assessments on the activity.
