Best practices in Writing Programs: first-year writing course readings and honors courses
Project Summary
In light of the Rutgers 101: College Writing curriculum redesign, the fellow will research key questions about ongoing best practices in Writing Programs at our peer universities. Specifically, this project proposes a dual-focus study of first-year writing courses: exploring genre-based reading and writing in first-year writing courses, and investigating honors first- year writing courses.

Key questions are as follows:

What do students read in first-year writing courses, and why? What is the relationship between what they read, and what they write? How does genre based reading and writing inform best practices in college writing?
How is honors first-year writing conceived of and administered? What defines honors writing? What is the genesis of these programs, and how have they evolved in response to changing student and academic needs?

In addition to learning about the research process, the fellows will learn about theory and practice in rhetoric and composition and help inform our own practices here at Rutgers.
