Aresty Research Assistant
New Jersey Folk Festival Research Assistant
Project Summary
The New Jersey Folk Festival is a project of the Department of American Studies at Rutgers University New Brunswick. The festival highlights cultures and communities of New Jersey and gives students a hands-on internship
experience in producing public arts and humanities programs.

Each year we research artists and community members who will participate in our programs. Students conduct oral history interviews and archival research leading to the development of festival performances, programs, and media projects. Students researchers may prepare proposals for programs based on their research and deposit ethnographic material in our archive. Students may also develop media or exhibit projects from their research.

In 2024-2025, the New Jersey Folk Festival will be pursuing two research project areas related to our upcoming programs.

The "50th Anniversary" project research will look backwards to the history of the festival, highlights from its artists and performances over its 50 years at Rutgers, and interviews with its student alumni.

The "Stages of Translation" project research will investigate multilingual experiences in the transmission and preservation of culture through traditional art forms.
