Candidate Characteristics Project: Race, Ethnicity and Gender of State and Local Candidates
Project Summary
Recent elections have been touted as being the "most diverse" - more women, women of color and candidates of color running than in the last six elections combined. The goal of this project is to examine the linkage between race/ethnicity and gender on state and local legislative primary and general election outcomes. What factors determine if these minority candidates get on the ballot, and what factors influence if they win? Previous research has demonstrated that in Congressional elections, women and candidates of color in particular are hurt by gender and racial stereotypes, partisan bias, and primary structures. Building on this research, this project will extend those findings to new electoral venues - state and school board primary and general elections in 2024 - and another disenfranchised groups - racial/ethnic minorities. Once data is collected, we will examine the questions of where, when and how minority candidates run and win.
