Bilingual child language development: heritage and second language learners of Spanish
Project Summary
This a continuation of a previous study (Austin, Sánchez and Pérez-Cortés, in press) on the effects of language contact on the grammatical development of Spanish-English bilingual children (ages 4-6). In Austin et al. (in press), we present evidence of crosslinguistic influence in the distribution of null and overt subjects in English as a second language as acquired by heritage Spanish children. In this follow up study, we explore in depth this distribution using an experimental picture-based task in Spanish and English and we include a new group of children currently attending an immersion school.
