Our laboratory seeks to understand how unicellular algae perceive and respond to environmental signals. This is a fundamental issue in biology; how does a cell control gene expression in a variable environment? We use diatoms as model organisms to understand how algae alter gene expression in response to changes in light, temperature and nutrient availability.
